If you thought there would be complex algorithms involved and this would be a lot of work, breathe easy. It’s actually not that hard to match your jewelry to your outfit. Though we are impressed by your commitment to fashion that you’d search out an algorithm for it.

Matching your jewelry to your outfit doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, most of the time, it’s quite simple and there are really only a few things to keep in mind. First things first, though — make sure you know how to pick out a good outfit.

Get a Few Basic Items

You don’t have to have a crazy amount of jewelry to match it to your outfits. If you just pick up a few basic pieces, you’re set for most things. A few solid pieces of everyday jewelry will be enough for 80 percent of your needs.

Maybe pick up a couple of necklaces in different colors along with a few rings and bracelets. You don’t need to go overboard or break the bank — just a few basics will be plenty.

Formality

This tends to be a problem men have more than women, but no one is immune. Think back to the last formal event you attended. There’s a decent chance there was some guy there wearing a belt or watch too casual for his outfit. If you’re exclusively around well-dressed, fashionable people, maybe you don’t relate, but you get the concept.

Matching in formality is the second-most important way to match (besides color, which we’ll get to). You don’t want to wear formal jewelry with jeans, nor do you want to wear a leather bracelet with cocktail attire. You may not really want to wear a leather bracelet in general, but that’s your prerogative.

As a rule of thumb, the more formal, the more classic. Once you get good at it, you can play around with it — but for now, it’s the rule. For black tie affairs, you want to go with simple and elegant earrings, for example. If you’re just going out for coffee, you can throw on some really fun and eccentric jewelry to spice up a simpler outfit.

Color

You don’t always have to match in color, but you always have to at least complement. Sometimes, matching won’t look as good as complementing, though, so use your best discretion. If you want to go to a higher level, match your jewelry to the accent colors on your outfit.

If you aren’t sure where to start, getting a basic understanding of what colors go together is huge and will save you tons of guesswork.

Symmetry

This one can take a bit of work but looks great when pulled off (and bad when miscalculated). Take formal wear, for example. If you’re wearing a formal dress, you want your necklace to take up exposed space. If you have a low neckline, you want a longer necklace to fill that space and add symmetry to your look. If you have a higher neckline, a long necklace is going to look out of place and you’ll want something closer to the neck instead.

The same general idea applies for bracelets. A bold bracelet can take up that space well if you’re wearing a tank top or something with short sleeves (even cuffed long sleeves). If you have long sleeves, that same bracelet is going to be overshadowed. Those long sleeves will be complemented quite well by your stackable wedding bands, though!

The best way to start matching your jewelry with your outfit is just to give it a try! You might make a couple of mistakes along the way, but you’ll learn what you like quickly. Soon, you won’t even be giving it a second thought.
